iPhone 1st Gen with reg. AT&T Sim Card

Hello. I have an 1st gen iPhone that needs to be restored. Would it be safe to restore it using my iTunes 7.7 that is set to put software 2.0 on it?

But... I need to use the iPhone with a regular AT&T sim card, not a special iPhone sim card. Do I need to unlock it? If I need to unlock it I shouldn't put 2.0 on it right?
