A tech-friend of mine informed me that as of about 10 days ago, the iPhone 2 chipset hadn't been taped-out yet. Apparently the engineers at Apple were going to get them taped-out shortly thereafter. If this is indeed the case, they will then have to fabricate the chips, test them, manufacture packaging for the chips, complete all other engineering/design around these chips, ingtegrate software, test, debug, etc...
Steve Jobs apparently wants the complete production done by June, but the laws of physics and production cycles point more to an August ship-date for the next version of an iPhone... if any of what I learned is true. FWIW
