Iphone 2G from US.

I have a stupid question. since i live in Canada and the Iphone is now available here. I have the model Ma712ll modem firmware 04.05.04_g. when the 3.0 comes out. can i just update/upgrade to it and have it working that way since Fido is now a seller for the Iphone. or will I need to wait for the Iphone dev team to come out with the jailbreak so I can use my phone.
