iPhone 2G on/button won't stay off to save batter

Please help! From Zambia where there is no iphone store in the country. When I press the top button (on/off button) to get rid of my screen and save my battery, it goes black for one second then comes on again to my home page I.e the power saving option of "turning off" the home page is not working...

Maybe try doing a restore on it.

plug it to itunes and hit the restore button.
