I've done my research and I know that iphone 2g LCD screen, digitizer, and glass are all "fused" together so you have to replace everything if something with the screen breaks. I've seen on eBay that you can buy an LCD screen for 2g and you can also buy a digitizer with glass screen. Buying these elements separately and putting them together is cheaper than buying a complete LCD, digitizer, and glass screen unit. So, I would take my old iphone screen completely out, and put in a new LCD and separate digitizer/glass unit to make a complete screen. My question is, has anyone done it this way? Does it work?

its a scam dont do it! you can also buy a glass for a 3g or 3gs without a digitizer. fixing a 2g is not worth it. you can buy a 3g used for the same money to buy the parts to fix the 2g. or you can upgrade if your eligible for $99 and get an 8 gig 3gs.

i was thinking today, they sell screens for 2g 3g/s, what about for 4? and what would happen f you put an i4 screen on an earlier device

I do repairs on the iPhone 4. The back is 75, the front is 200. If your going to pay me that to fix a phone, you may as well pay me the $275 and I can make your entire phone white.

Repairing a iphone 2g with the separate LCD and Digitizer/glass WORKS !
I repaired my iphone 2g like this. :D

Buy these two (pretty cheap! $45 :D):

Don't forget to first put them together before you assemble it into your iphone! Don't let dust get between them.

Both lcd and digitizer/glass are delivered in a foam box and protected by foil on each side of the units.

It still works great! I had an unresponsive touchscreen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g51uEx3ZJbg

Is there any chance you have a link/can post a DIY how to properly do this? I already have an LCD which I purchased on fleabay, but once I got it I thought I was scammed because 2g LCD/digitizer glass were supposed to be a single assembly. Based on your post, I ordered the digitizer glass as well. Still, am a bit antsy on taking on the repair since based on what I have seen thus far it is very complicated.
