iPhone 2G update to latest firmware

Hi All!

Just wanted to verify with you all before I take some action on this Iphone 2G.
My friend gave it to me in hope i can update it to the latest firmware and also jailbreak.
At the moment it has 1.1.2 firmware on it, and some apps like anysim, bosstool, ssh, installer - guess these were used to jailbreak it days ago.

So just to verify, this is what i should do?
1) Backup the current software just in case.
2) Download the 3.1.2 version. Install it on iphone.
3) Download the cracked new 3.1.2 version
4) Jailbreak it with pwnage tool.
5) Done

Am I getting it right?

You can now jailbreak on 3.1.3, you know right?

Update to 3.1.3
Setup as new phone
Download and run spirit (spiritjb.com)
Enjoy jailbroken phone.

I wasnt sure about the 3.1.3, but great news if that can be done
So I just let itunes to update it to 3.1.3 and then use spirit ? (Will I later also be able to unlock the phone? as far as i know, his sim cant be used to just unlock regularly later)
