iPhone 2G's data usage is impossible to block - HELP!

I have tried SBSettings, data blocker, bossprefs and several APN changers on my iPhone 2G, but it still manages to connect via edge or GPRS causing me a hefty charge for data use when out of reach of wifi. I've tried restoring it and changed root and mobile password just after, but the same thing happens. It is currently on 3.1... I have called my network provider and they say they can't disable edge/GPRS.

Any solutions or suggestions on what might cause this are much appreciated!
