iPhone 3.1.2 upgraded to 4.0 GM: Can I Pwnage tool it? More info inside...

I have a day one 3GS with the 359.3 bootrom (old?).
It was running a 3.1.2 until the GM came out. The phone was jailbroken with 3.1.2.

The phone has never had 3.1.3 or has been used with Spirit.

My question is how do I jailbreak 4.0?
Do I downgrade to 3.1.2 and jailbreak straight to 4.0?
Do I downgrade to 3.1.2 and jailbreak that, THEN go to 4.0?
Do I jailbreak just create a custom IPSW file with Pwnage tool for 4.0 and go ahead in recovery mode?

upgrade to 4.0 with pwnage tool 4.0

Thanks for the response! Why do I have to go to 3.1.3 before 4.0 however?

I've been trying to go from 3.1.2 to jailbroken 3.1.3 then jailbroken iOS4 but everytime I get to 3.1.3 I lose the network carrier. If I try going from jailbroken 3.1.2 to iOS4 I get an error 1600. Ideas?
