A week ago the home button stopped responding, I removed it from the case (otterbox defender) and now it works fine. Thinking something was wrong with the case I purchased a cheap plastic case til my new otterbox arrives only to have the same problem.

The phone was great until last week, in case no response out of case works fine. Anyone have an idea of what would cause this to happen?

Probably a dirty home button, it happens often. In Europe we get a chemical called Kontakt 60 for this. Google "Kontakt 60 iPhone home button" or something similar and you'll get the procedure. It's simple, cheap and very effective if that is indeed your problem.
