Iphone 3 strange silent problem

hi please give me some advice what to do about a strange problem i'm having with my iphone 3.
it's not in silent mode and the volume is up but i get no sound notifications, no ring tones, no key press or lock noises. no shutter sounds from the camera either.
games make no noises either but the ipod plays music fine.
also if i go to the sounds section under settings and select a ringtone it will play it as a preview.
it's like the volume is down for everything but it's not. i tried restarting it but it make no difference. this morning i used itunes to restore from a backup and it still doesn't work.
i would appreciate it if someone has a fresh idea about what i can do.

Is the mute switch on on the left side of the phone? The switch right above the volume buttons.

no the mute switch is in its normal position. the phone is not in do no disturb either

im thinking it's obviously software not hardware since your speaker does work for music. You may have a corrupt backup. Try restore the phone but as new. You will still have your backup if it doesn't work but if alert tones work again when set up as new then something along the way corrupt your software and those backups are useless

thanks for the reply and it was worth trying but it hasn't worked. i think it's a simpler problem anyway i'm pretty sure the silent mode switch is broken as when i toggle it it doesn't do anything at all. so the phone is stuck in silent mode. might be time to upgrade anyway

That sucks probably right but iPhone has made vast improvements! lol
