iphone 3 won't work with itunes??

Hi,

I'm gathering it's because I recently updated itunes to 8, but now my daughter's iphone 3gs won't work on it! Tried to add some music & when I press sync, itunes shuts down! This doesn't happen with my iphone 4. Can someone tell me how to overcome this problem please?? Should I 'downgrade' itunes again??
