iphone 3g 3.1.3 (05-12-01) never connects to wifi only ad-ahocs

hi, iv had this phone for 2 years now, it never connects to anything, always "unable to connect" recently after trying freezing for a couple of hours while its turn on it started connecting to adhocs only. iv tried all the resets,freezing.pls help. it never connects to wifi secure or not.

Try to restore it or update your firmware to iOS 4.

my iphone is unlocked, i heard it will lock it if i update. this phone is really odd, i live in canada and when i travel to usa, the internet works out of nowhere, not connected to wifi( no wifi icon) the internet would just work. mind you i was on a pay as you go card that expired while i was there, meaning no phone service. i dunno
