Iphone 3G A1421 - broken after upgrading jailbreak

I bought a replacement phone for my daughter's broken 3gS, to give her for her 14th birthday this Thursday. I didn't have an insurance contract on that phone.. so I resorted to craigslist to find a local phone. Her old phone was broken beyond repair, unfortunately (after having the first screen replaced - it slowly fell apart).

The craigslist phone worked, and I connected it to my mac, and ran the restore program on it, telling it to restore and update to latest firmware.

Problem is my daughter's phone was a 3GS, and this one is a Jailbreak'd 3G.

Now, no matter what I do, all I get is the recovery logo. I tried iReb on my laptop, tried the tiny umbrella... maybe I don't have the steps right.

My guess is it tried to push the 3GS firmware down its 3G throat, and bye bye $150.00.
 
When you hit restore, ITunes is getting firmware for that phone Apple server, download it to your Mac, then install it to your phone. So, you did not put 3GS firmware onto this 3G.

You did not brick the phone. I believe because the phone you bought have the IPad baseband on it and since it has iPad baseband, you can restore it to official Apple firmware. That the reason it hang.

Here is what you need to do.
1. Download 3G 3.1.3 firmware to your MAC.
2. Download/install tiny umbrella to your Mac.
3. Put your 3G iPhone into DFU mode.
4. Restore it to 3.1.3 firmware.
5. At the end ITunes will give you a 1015 error.
6. Close ITunes, open tiny umbrella, hit exit recovery.
7. Your phone should boot up normally to emergency screen.

Once I do this will I be able to upgrade normally to the newest software? Or do I need to un-Jailbreak the phone?

Once you restore to this firmware. You un-jailbreak the phone already. Give me the baseband on it once you are done with restoring and I can give you what you need to do next.
 
The phone booted to emergency mode, sure enough. Well that's progress.. but what now?

Do you have old AT&T sim card? You need to put it into the phone. Hook it to ITunes so it can by pass the emergency screen and it will bring your phone to it's home screen. The sim does not need to be activated. Old/inactivate sim will work.

If you don't have it, then you will have to Hactivate it with Redsn0w.

I did have her SIM card, I installed it, and I set up this phone as a new device. It's now activated, with full access.

Can I tell it to upgrade to latest IOS or not?

As the above posts indicate - I downgraded to 3.1.3 to make it work.

EDIT: Okay, I see. The 3.1.3 was the firmware, not the software?

Well, I told itunes to upgrade it, now back at the same recovery loop problem.

I hope this works again, I will never touch it again. Wow.
 
Rolling back to the 3.1.3 image, it works again.

Is there something modified that I need to change so it will act like a normal iphone and not do this?

Or is this the "new normal"?

As indicate earlier. You need to give me the baseband on it. What is it?

Go to "Setting", "General", "About" and look at the bottom at "Modem Firmware" and tell me which number is it?

my concern is that somehow, yours has been upgrade to 06.15 which is Ipad baseband and that the reason you can't restore/upgrade to the latest firmware 4.2.1 with Apple server.

If you have 06.15 on yours, they use Pwanage tool to cook a custom 4.2.1 firmware and upgrade your phone to that firmware.
 
It says "Modem Firmware 06.15.00"

So what does this mean, and what should I do now?

BTW - I am an AT&T customer, with an AT&T SIM. The phone is activated (I just made test calls on it).

Can't find a specific place that says bootloader, but tinyubrella reports:

Installed Baseband Image: 06.15.00-5.8_M3S2

I see there is a 5.8 there. Is does that mean the bootloader is 05.08? How do I downgrade?

1. Jailbreak your phone. You can just do it by opening Safari on your phone, type in Jailbreakme.com. It will give you instruction to jailbreak it and install Cydia onto your phone.
2. Open Cydia, install Fuzzyband
3. Run Fuzzyband to downgrade your baseband back to 05.13.

Ideally, I just want a non-jailbreaked phone, that my daughter can just click "restore" when necessary.

You can now hook it up to Itunes, click restore and it will bring your phone to 4.2.1 firmware with 05.14 baseband and you will have an un-jailbreak phone.
