I have an iPhone 3G and use a Microsoft Exchange Server for office email. I have used this successfully for the past 18 months, but two weeks ago started having trouble getting email to appear on my phone. I can use Safari to see the email over the web and the read email will then appear on my phone. In addition, if I am logged in to the network on my desktop and I have Outlook open, my email syncs perfectly with my phone even if the mail is unread.

I have asked our IT guy to help, but I am the lone iPhone in a sea of BlackBerries so he just keeps telling me that he isn't sure how to fix it. It seems my settings are ok or the phone wouldn't sync when I am logged in. I am still using 3.1.3. I love my iPhone and don't want to go to a BB so I need to get this issue resolved. A phone upgrade is still a few months away.

I see lots of posts about gmail through exchange, but none seem to be this issue. My gmail and yahoo accounts are working perfectly. Any suggestions?

I've never had any trouble at all with the 3G, 3GS or iPhone using any available system. Describe "trouble getting mail to appear on my phone". Does it just sit there and spin while displaying "connecting...."? Does it appear to do everything normally but nothing changes? If it works when you're on the local network and doesn't work when you're anywhere else, I would suspect it's a network security issue, not an Exchange issue per se. You might want to ask the IT what, if anything, he's changed per that recently and see what he says.

IPhone Exchange Server with Outlook

When I do not have Outlook running on my desktop, the trouble I have with my email over Exchange is my iPhone looks like it has connected to the server, it updates the date and time, but doesn't retrieve any unread email. If I remote login via safari and read email, only read emails will show up on the phone.

IT says they have not changed settings on the server. The part that has me stumped is that it works when I have Outlook open on my desktop, but not when it is closed.

Well that takes me out of the running....never heard of such a thing, I'm afraid. Hopefully someone else has a clue. :)

I have had this issue on about 4 iphones out of 20.
I have managed to get around it twice. Which was to remove the email account on exchange and recreate it. This is an ideal situation but it worked.

another trick i found was to make sure not to have entourage or outlook open on any device while setting up the account on the iphone. Also make sure not to be on wifi only on 3G.

again these tricks have worked but not everytime. I still have one iphone that is having this issue. Im working on it and if i find a better solution ill let you know.
