iPhone 3G and mov files

Hi, I just made a video with my iPad 2 on the standard camera app. I sent it to myself in email and opened the email on my iPhone 3G. However, when I click on the movie file, it says " this movie format is not supported."

Is this because I'm still running 3.1.3? I didnt want to upgrade the os on the 3G for fear of bad performance.
