iPhone 3G and OS 4.2.1 not cooperating, tips needed!

After installing OS 4.2.1 on my iPhone 3G the internet has slowed down tremendously. The phone in general has slowed down a little but nothing compared to cell data and using Safari. What can I do to speed it up? Is it possible to downgrade, or did Apple release a new software update that fixes these problems?
 
you can downgrade your iOS to 3.1.3 but if there are any apps that require iOS 4 or higher you are SOL
