Since you have to activate the new iPhone 3G in-store, what about the people that are buying the phone as a gift? How will they handle a situation like that?
You can't just buy it and activate it in-store and then give it to someone.
 
Yes, Give a gift certificate or a check. There is no way you should actually try to surprise someone with something like this anyway. If you KNOW they want it they could too easily sneak out and buy it without telling you.
 
The AT&T iPhone 3G FAQ that was posted here says that if customers want to buy as a gift the employee is instructed to offer them a $199/299 giftcard instead.
