iPhone 3G Battery Way out of Sync

I thought that my battery just sucked but then I realized that my phone will go from 100 to 89 in five minutes but stay on 2 percent for an hour. How do I fix this so that the battery is in sync.
 
I am letting my iPhone completely die but its been about three hours and it still boots to the Plug In screen however its not completely dead.
