iphone 3g, buy at at&t or apple?

i want to buy an iphone 3g, preferably an 8gb. I will be a new at&t customer and want to pay the 199$ fee. a lot of questions..here we go..
so where would you recommend i buy the phone ? i understand if i buy it at apple, i may get it that same day? rather than at at&t.

but will i be able to add my employment discount ONLINE after buying the phone from apple?

how is the availability of this in NJ?

You will get it same day on both AT&T and Apple
I would buy it at apple, they have more in stock and get more frequent shipments
