Okay maybe you all can help me here.

My iphone 3G is jailbroken, but every time I go into cydia it will not open/crashes. Every site I have been to says to go to /var/lib/apt/lists and delete the files. The problem is that I have been there and I see no files at all. It's empty.

What am I to do if you don't see the files?

You will need to add them back,

You will need to create a .txt file for each of the sources below, the contents of the text file being the source below and the name (example saurik.list for the first source). And do that for each source, you can google the default names that you need to save each source as.

deb http://apt.saurik.com/ ios/675.00 main
deb http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com/ ./
deb http://cydia.zodttd.com/repo/cydia/ stable main
deb http://apt.thebigboss.org/repofiles/cydia/ stable main
deb http://apt.modmyi.com/ stable main

Once this is done you need to save them to:

etc/apt/trusted.xx

Once you have done this you will need to install iFunbox ( http://www.i-funbox.com/ ) and ssh into your phone. Once you have the ssh window open you will need to enter a command

apt-get update

(Once the update is done you may need to run it ("apt-get update" command) more than once if you notice Cydia keeps crashing)

This will update Cydia and ensure all needed files are installed, and then type "reboot" into the command line to reboot the phone. Depending on the issue this should fix it. I was having the same problem yesterday as matter of fact.

Also, the only files you need to delete are:

Navigate to /private/etc/apt/sources.list.d

Delete the file "cydia.list" (click EDIT on the top right, select the file, and click the waste basket).

Navigate to /var/lib/apt/lists

Delete all of the files in this folder except the one called "lock"

Navigate to /var/lib/apt/lists/partial

Delete all of the files in this folder

Navigate to /var/lib/cydia

Delete the file "metadata.plist"
