iPhone 3G doesn't recognize embedded number

On my iPhone 2G, the phone recognized the telephone number embedded into the SIM Card and displayed it in iTunes and Contacts application in Phone app. However ever since i got an iPhone 3G these have disappeared even though other phones still recognize the sim

Did Apple purposely turn it off?
