My friend's iPhone 3G has a weird problem. It goes to sleep/powers off OK, but the sleep wake button refuses to work sometimes after being put to sleep. So if you press the button once while it's on, iPhone turns off, but then when you try and press the button again to turn it on and awake it from sleep, it refuses to turn on, and it must be placed in the dock in order to turn on. Mechanically, the button seems to be working fine and the phone was not dropped. Some reading around on the internet suggested it could be due to changes in temperature/humidity but at this time of the year the climatic changes aren't very significant. It seems to be a problem with the button. What do you think? And what will Apple do, if anything?

This seems to be a hardware issue that Apple should fix. So long as the moisture sensors haven't been tripped or anything.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The phone was definitely not exposed to a potential source of water damage. Like anyone else's phone it was probably used in the rain but I really doubt it could be water damage...and if it is....:(

look at your headphone port. if you see white at the end your fine. water damage phone will have a red end

No red is apparent.

That's a pretty cool check Apple built into the phone...
