My 3G doesn't get very loud either. M wife has an iPod mini (Pre-nano) and that thing will blow your ears off. She plays it in the morning at full volume leaving the headphones on the master bath counter and I can hear it downstairs. My 3G iPhone has to be turned up to About 90% before I feel like I have a decent volume level and at 100% it's no where near "I'm Rocking Out!" or being umcomfortable.
