-----MOVED TO Hacks Section------- SORRY IM A MACRUMOR POSTING NEWB
Ok so iv'e been jailbreaking iphones for a while.
I have an iphone 3g that was probably running 3.1.3 when i got it.
Iv'e tried to update it directly through itunes, but always get an error 1601.
Basically same thing that happens when I use redsnow to jailbreak it. (put in dfu, the phone reboots once, and then the usb disconnects from the computer leaving me hanging)
Ive used iReb to put it in pwned dfu but nothing same exact thing.
Iv'e tried another computer but it was also a windows 7 system.
ive tried snowbreeze custom firmwares, tried pretty much everything I could find. not sure if it could be hardware, maybe battery or dock connector, but this is just so frustrating.
I also have tiny umbrella installed not sure if maybe thats messing some stuff up with the set hosts to cydia option because that messed up my iphone 4.

Help would be appreciated

So you're on 3.1.3? And you're trying to update to what firmware?

Also, Hacks section is thataway------> ;)

i have no idea whats its running thats the point.
its been sitting around for a long time so im assuming its 3.1.3 or so.
but what does it matter. can i not update from 3.1.3 to 4.2.1?

It matters where you're trying to go, not where you're coming from :)

Error 1601 is a weird iTunes related error. What version of iTunes are you running? If you're not on the newest version completely uninstall iTunes and do a fresh install of the newest. Then put phone in DFU and restore to stock 4.2.1. Jailbreak with GP :)

I know its a werid itunes error. but here again it says preparing iphone for restore. but nothing is going to happen. the sound of the usb disconnecting came up phone just wont reboot.... 5 mins and same error will come up

Reinstalling iTunes is sometimes not enough (bad files left behind). Go into your iTunes folder and save your library and then completely remove iTunes from your machine. Then, reinstall iTunes fresh. Once you're done that put the phone in DFU manually and try again.
