iPhone 3G future upgrade phone plan question

OK im just curious of this situation say i buy a 3g iphone when they go on sale.. and then they come out with a 32 gig one in 6 months.. and i want to get that one do i have to prolong my current at&t plan two more additional years?

From what i know, Yes. I got my iphone gen 1 at the beginning of the year and i have to resign a 2yr contract.
