iPhone 3g gray screen with silver apple logo.

I have been using my iPhone 3g for a while, but I have noticed a problem with it.

After a turn off and turn on last night, it stopped working.

First of all, it doesnt turn on at all unless it's plugged in, and if it's plugged in, it only shows a gray screen with a white apple logo on it.

What can be the cause of this? How can I get it working again...
