iPhone 3G in a non-3G area?

I searched the forums but couldn't find an answer to this question. I apologize if it seems stupid, I'm not sure how all of the data stuff works with smartphones.

If live in an area without 3G coverage, but we are covered by Edge data (2G?). If I get an iPhone 3G will I be able to use the Edge? Or can you only use 3G?

Yes it will work with edge just fine.

If you are in an area with poor 3G the iPhone will automatically revert to Edge. My Motorola Q9 Global does this as well.
