Iphone 3g international on wifi?

Hello,

I am bringinign an Iphone 3g abroad with me. I plan on taking the sim card out and onyl using wifi where available. Is this possible?

I figure if I have wifi spots I can use it to browse the iternet or with skype to make calls.
