so here's my full problem and fix attempts:
originally, my family friend was trying replace his iphone battery with one he had bought from eBay, because he didn't want to fork out $150+ to have apple do it. although he stupidly did not read any form of guide on how to do it, and thinking that it was the same as the old nokias, lifted off the back and basically blew up his iphone.
he had several photos on there, many that i managed to get from an itunes backup, although his most recent sync was the end of 2010, and there are still several un-synced photos he would like me to retrieve from his phone.
i was able to reassemble the iphone although at the time the power button cable was broken, so i was without a working power button or volume buttons. upon plugging it in, the screen came on with the charging battery symbol and the lightning bolt. i left it overnight to charge and no progress. attempted to change the battery to the new one and then nothing. back to the old battery and it came on when i plugged it in, showing the apple logo, but then died after 20 seconds or so. the phone only boots when i plug it in.
from here i was able to get into recovery mode by holding down the home button whilst plugging it into the computer and was able to execute some irecovery commands (setenv auto boot true etc) on my imac to no avail, although the command to reboot it was successful.
itunes came up and said there was an iPhone in recovery mode that needed restoring, but i was afraid to wipe the data and did not attempt to restore.
i order new parts (new flex cable for power button and volume buttons, vibrate switch holder and new dock connector) i thought that maybe a broken dock connector was not allowing sufficient charge through, but that didn't seem to be the case.
i have cleaned all the battery connection points with a swap and some mentholated spirits, but not change.
on connecting to the computer it came on only when the old battery was in, not when the new one was in, so i am currently using the old battery (the new one was working when connected to wall charger but not when connected to computer)
i then conceded that a restore might work and that i would be able to use data recovery software to recover the pictures afterward. i was presented error 23 in itunes, but persistent, used cpich's patch to allow itunes 9.0.2 installed on my xp pro laptop to bypass error 23. it begins to restore (the screen blacks out but remains on and then reboots) but then the same problem of it dying after the apple logo occurs just as the spinning wheel comes up.
now the phone upon connection to a power source (as thats they only way i can get any life out of it) displays the apple logo for a second then shows the connect to itunes. I reattempted the process to the same result.
I am aware that every attempt at a restore is like shooting an ak47 at the data so am reluctant to retry for a third time.
any help would be greatly appreciated. i am nearing wits end with this.
Just clarifying, the phone only shows signs of life when connected to a power source, other wise it does not come on by holding the power button and unplugging it while its on results in screen burn for a minute or so.
