I've had this old iPhone 3G laying around that I want to put on eBay and I'll get more money if I unlock it but I'm a bit confused.

I'm reading all sorts of stuff from using Redsnow to upgrading the IPSW with an iPad version...but all the stuff seems to be from Nov/Dec last year.

What's the definite answer here? What do I need to use to jailbreak and unlock the phone? I'm on a Mac computer. Thanks.

Your information is still relevant. Currently, there is no unlock for baseband 05.15. If you want to unlock it, you will have to install Ipad baseband onto your phone. However, before you do so, please do some research on it because once you install this Ipad baseband, there is no way to go back to the old baseband. Iclarified.com and dev team blog are good place to start.

Is there a reason I (or the person buying the phone) would have to go back to the old baseband?

check your bootloader with forecast from ih8snow, if your bootloader is 5.08 you can downgrade your baseband to 5.13.04, or Install fuzzyband from cydia to check your bootloader version. Fuzzyband also will tell you if your baseband is downgradeable or not. If it's downgradeable, it will downgrade it for you.

But if they don't work you can only install the ipad baseband and i wouldn't recommend that but it a personal choice

Ok, so first to jailbreak it and get Fuzzyband from Cydia. \
Does Greenpois0n work with the 3G or do I need to go a different route?

You can find out your bootloader without jailbreaking the iphone. Just download tiny umbrella. Hook it up and it will tell you what you have fir.

Greenpois0n works for 3GS & Iphone4 only.

Just downloaded TinyUmbrella but where does it show me the bootloader? I only see...

Device Model
Firmware Version
Baseband Version
ECID
Serial Number
IMEI

Baseband Version is 05.15.04-6.4_M3S2

So is the bootloader 6.4?

As for jailbreaking...I've had no luck with Redsnow. It keeps saying"Unable to recognize specified IPSW". I've tried 3 different versions of Redsnow and tried two different IPSW files from two sources. :(

Ok so jailbreak finally successful...needed Redsnow 0.9.7b6. It's doing it's thing now and I'll check the baseband with Fuzzyband as I'm not quite sure what it is.

And yep...I've got bootloader 6.4 so it can't be unlocked. I guess I'll just sell it as jailbroken but not unlocked.

My question is, if I wanted to restore the phone at a later date, how would I go about doing that? Or would I need to somehow revert the baseband back?

First, Thanks for bring back an 8 months old thread.

Second, once you install iPad baseband, you can no longer restore it to Apple official firmware.
