iPhone 3G keyboard is white screen only when keyboard showing

Friends phone:

iPhone 3G works fine except when trying to make call. Entire screen is white, cannot dial number or anything, but get out of phone mode (home key) and rest of iPhone works fine.

Restarted iPhone, no change. Apple troubleshooting is no help (that I found)

Short of hooking up to computer and restore, what else can be done?
