Iphone 3G not updating emails regularly anymore

I have both my exchange and gmail accounts set to check email every 15 minutes..

Despite reboots, i'm having an issue where it doesnt auto check for emails regularly anymore..

Sometimes it will if i open the mail app, hit refresh, like within 1 hour or so.. but then other times it doesnt.

I'm pretty sure it may have something to do with the email app not staying in the background, perhaps.

Has anyone ran into this and found a fix?
