My brothers iPhone 3G pauses and unpauses songs whilst playing through a select few headphones before finally staying on pause. Sometimes the volume jumps up and down 50% as well.

The Apple earphones work fine, but all the others that he has do this to the phone. These ones work fine in both my iPhone 1st gen, iPod touch 1st gen, iPod nano 1st gen, iPod nano 2nd gen and MacBook.

He went into the O2 store where he bought the phone yesterday and they said to contact Apple.. Phone call later didn't get anywhere so we both went to nearest Apple store (45 mins away) for them to say "Oh, never seen this happening before".

The guy in the Apple store tried all the problematic headphones on the store phones and nothing happened. Conclusion - Phone problem.

We took it home and updated to 2.1 as per the apple store guy's advice only to find the problem still exists. After a full erase and restore (the one that takes about an hour) it still happens.

He phoned Apple today and they started giving loads of BS about "Where does it say on our website that any earphones work?" and stuff. We've seen other discussions on the net about people experiencing the same problem and when getting a replacement phone not having the problem, but anyone we've spoken to refuse to replace it, blaming the earphones.

What can we do? Proven to be the iPhone that's faulty but nobody will listen.

Talk to a manager and prove to them? Argh!
