iPhone 3G Photos Not Transferring Automatically to Mac

When I first got my iPhone my photos transferred to my Mac automatically.

Now, and for the last two months, whenever I sync up my iPhone to the computer, iPhoto successfully opens, it reads the iPhone device for a few seconds then the device disappears and none of my photos download.

Is there a way to do this manually. What happened to my original settings that made it happen automatically? And why is iPhoto reading he device at first then not?

Thanks for all help on this. I have several hundred photos on my phone that I'd like to get on my computer.

Mac OS X 10.6.3. I know it probably has something to do with a software update

Update first, and then open up Image Capture and tell us what you see in the bottom left hand corner when you plug in your iPhone.
