iphone 3G problem

I have an old 16gb iphone 3G that i use for an ipod and recently it turned into a white screen of death and i cannot figure out how to get it to reset because i think it is a software problem. because when it is almost dead it shows the low battery screen but as soon as you start it up with a charge it goes to the white screen, and i cannot get itunes to read it. any help would be wonderful
