ok guys i have iphone 3g 2.1 now i want to update my phone to 2.2 but if i click update on itunes it will automatically update to 2.2.1 and i won't be able to soft unlock my phone.. i want to know that how can i update my iphone 3g 2.1 to 2.2 and after that can i unlock with yellowsn0w??? pls help

I don't understand; can you not just download the new 2.2.1 firmware (NOTE: download ONLY) and use PwnageTool to make a custom 2.2.1 that will preserve the baseband? Then use iTunes to update to the custom firmware?

EDIT: Nevermind. 2.2 is needed for the 2.28.00 baseband.

You'll have to find 2.2 online somewhere and use iTunes to restore to that. Once you're there, you can then use PwnageTool on the new 2.2.1 firmware.
