iPhone 3G repair question

I am giving my 3G to my girlfriend so i can get the new 3Gs, but I cracked my 3G's screen and they told me it wasn't under warranty for that. I am very comfortable opeing up my phone to replace the screen myself. I just have a question if i am ordering the right part here?

My screen is cracked but 100% percent functional. has anyone just bought the replacement glass or do i have to buy the glass with the digitizer!

No. You need the glass AND the digitizer preassembled. There is so way to remove the digitizer from broken glass and attach it to the new glass.

This is NOT an easy repair.

i will give it a try. i had opened up many 1 gen phones (to do hardware unlock, and replace the back housings) but never a screen!

i am pretty sure i can do it!

Personally I'd go the $199 route and have Apple replace it for me. Let us know how it works out.
