So, today I went into my local AT&T store to ask about updating. I had an iPhone 3G that was purchased on launch day, and it was stolen about a month ago. So my plan was to save my money to buy the next iPhone, and just go without a phone for a little while. When I found I wouldn't be able to buy without having to pay $499, I was very annoyed with AT&T/Apple's method of upgrading. I called AT&T, as well as Apple to try and find more information, they hadn't seemed to know anything about it. I went into the AT&T store today, I talked to a rep, and explained my story. She told me the best thing to do, would be to add another line to my family plan, and they would be able to reduce the current line to $10 a month, just to keep that line open. Doing this, I would be able to buy the 32GB iPhone, for $299, and just pay 10 more dollars a month to keep the other line open. They said they would be able to transfer my number over to the new line for free as well.
Hopefully this can help some of you other early 3G adopters.
