iPhone 3g sim card problems

So, a long story short I got a iPhone 3g from my friend, who said that it was working correctly, but somewhat randomly it started saying "the sim card you inserted does not seem to be supported etc.(well you know the stuff) although he had a supported sim card from the original carrier. So he gave it to me and now I'm trying to get it working(so i could use it). I tried restoring it without a sim card inserted so it has the 4.2.1 firmware on it. Can I unlock it without the original carrier sim card and get it working, or is that just impossible?

run it through redsn0w 0.9.6rc16 to activate it, and install the iPad base and on it. Once you are done, install ultrasn0w from cydia to unlock it.

iphone 3g with simple mobile

i have a iphone 3g that i want to use with simple mobile.
I have used redsn0w and ultrasnow to (hopefully) jailbreak and unlock the phone to use a sim card from simple mobile.

my settings: 4.2.1
carrier carrier 9.0
firmware 5.15.04

3g enabled
cellular data on
cellular data network:
apn:simple
username
password
mms
apn simple

something like that anyway...
so, i install the simple mobile sim card and toggel the airplane mode to get it to search.. and thats all it does is say searching....

what do i do to get to to work on simple mobile?
