An Australian Mobile Carrier Optus seems to be doing an 'not so normal' discount on iPhone.

I can't remember the exact pricing but on the launch date I don't think it was possible to grab an iPhone for free even on 79$ plan. Then since few wks ago Optus began to advertise free on 79$ plan and then now 49$ plan....

so finally it seems like stars are lining up for new iPhone launch...

Tell me if this is a old news... I will delete it:apple:

p.s. is any other carriers in different countries doing similar discount?

Yes, several reports over the last few weeks indicate that the stock clearance has already begun. (including a whopping $10 of the monthly AT&T subscription costs)

I've heard rumors of this. When is it supposedly taking effect?

It will probably take effect around the launch of the new iPhone. This way AT&T can charge that extra $10 to those with the new one for the "faster" 3G service.

How great would it be if they included messages in the cost of the data plan like they did with the original plan? Seems like a fair notion to me.
