So I bought an iPhone 3G from someone the other day, and I went to Settings>Delete all contents or whatever it's called. While it was recovering/deleting stuff, I decided I would just put it into recovery mode and connect it to iTunes to restore it. The problem is, my computer/iTunes won't recognize the phone, and it won't go into DFU mode. I am on a Mac because my computer broke, and I don't know much about Mac's so maybe there is a way to get the phone to be recognized? The phone is on 3.1.2 and the computer has the newest iTunes version.

I was trying to jailbreak it with blackra1n as well, and blackra1n won't recognize the phone either. Thanks for any help.

Your mistake was deleting all content. Your ONLY hope is to get it into DFU mode. Keep trying and never use "delete all content" unless you're giving the phone back to Apple. You could have restored and setup as new and had a clean phone.

Well I haven't been able to get it into DFU mode, what are my options?

you have to keep trying that may be your only hope right now.........just make sure you doing the DFU mode right.............

I'm pretty sure that you can't make it go into DFU mode unless it thinks it is hooked up to USB. At least I've never had any success making an iDevice go into DFU when it was not connected to a computer.

So maybe the problem goes both ways: the computer doesn't recognize that the iPhone is connected, and the iPhone probably doesn't think it is connected to the computer, either.

Have you tried a different computer? A different USB cable? Not using a USB hub? :p (just in case...)

try this plug in the usb hold home and power down for 10 seconds release the power button but still hold the home button down for 10 seconds see if that kicks it on

Just tried it on my own computer, which I mentioned wasn't working earlier, and it seemed to go into DFU mode :). Now I need to install iTunes because my hard drive was wiped blank. Thanks for the help.
