iPhone 3G Stuck In Recovery Mode (Don't Know Previous Firmware)

Hi,

I was restoring my iPhone 3G because I wanted to give it to my dad and it went into recovery mode. Its been a while since I used it and I can't remember the firmware it was on from the top of my head. I tried restoring it in iTunes but get an error. Is there an easy way of getting out of recovery mode? Im willing to take the time and try every firmware out if needed.
