iPhone 3G stuck on iOS 4.2.1

I have an iPhone 3G and am stuck on iOS 4.2.1. Somehow I can't upgrade to a higher iOS each stops me from downloading certain apps.

I have an iPhone 3G and am stuck on iOS 4.2.1. Somehow I can't upgrade to a higher iOS each stops me from downloading certain apps.

I could be wrong but that might be as far as the 3G can go. I know my wifes 3GS was not about to get the new iOS 6 that just launched. Also, my iPad (first generation) and second generation iPod touch.
