Iphone 3g to 2g help

So my dad sold his 3G for a 3GS but everywhere is sold out and he needs a phone quick. I happen to have an old 2G but when I try to put in the sim it tells me to activate on itunes, so I do that but it wants me to put on the old $20 plan.
Any way aroudn this?
