iPhone 3g Update to iOS 4.2

I bought my iphone 3g (not 3gs) few weeks ago. its currently running iOS 3.1.3.
I want to know, is it better to update to iOS 4.2 ?
Some people says me that iPhone 3g slowdown after updated to iOS 4. Is it true ?? please tell me

Stick with 3.1.3 unless you really have to upgrade to anything higher than 4.0

4.0 and higher slows down the 3G a lot.
