iPhone 3G upgrade from 2.2 to 3.x? Skip 4.0?

I have a neglected 3G on 2.2 firmware and a Macbook with iTunes 8. I've put iTunes 9.1 on and not 9.2 so I have the ability to jailbreak it later to make it act as wifi for my ipad.

If I check for an update, will it force 4.0 on me?

Yes, it will automaticly update you to the latest firmware thats out.
If you want you can download 3.1.3 from here: http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite...00202.pbnrt/iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw
and then hold down Shift and click restore thru itunes to select this file instead of 4.0
Or option+restore for a mac computer.

Is shift-click available in iTunes 9.1? I thought it was 9.2 only.
