Hi all,

I've browsed all over these forums and there is a TON of fantastic information, you guys are great. But I'm still confused on how to proceed.

I'm looking for how to upgrade my 3G from 3.0.1 (7A400) to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3. I hear there's not much point to upgrading to *.3 though. OR would it be feasible to go to 4.0?

My phone is already unlocked and jail-broken with 3.0.1 and I use it on T-Mobile. (ultrasn0w 0.93 for unlock but I don't know what was used to jail-break)

My firmware is 04.26.08.

Can I just use Blackra1n and keep the jailbreak/unlock or do I have to re-jailbreak/unlock or should I use redsn0w and/or something else?

Cydia reports that I have SHSH on file for 4.0 so does that mean I can upgrade to 4.0? I see that there are mixed reviews/results for people with 3G going to 4.0, but if I can downgrade, I might contemplate giving it a go. Otherwise 3.1.2 is adequate for me.

I'm pretty tech-savvy, been a server/network admin for 12+ years but this has me stumped. (must be getting old ;) )

Thanks in advance :)

Do you have a 3G or 3GS model?
There's no SHSH's for 3G iphones just 3GS.
You can update to 3.1.3 or 4.0 and still JB and unlock a 3G iphone.
You will have to JB again and unlock.

Thank you Applejuiced.
It is just a 3G (not a 3GS).

I'm assuming I can use iTunes to upgrade to 3.1.2 and just point it to the ipsw file on my Windows 7 PC. (the shift+update method?)

Then I guess what I'm asking is what tools would I use to jailbreak and unlock?

You're welcome.
Yes, hold shift and click restore and point it to the 3.1.2 ipsw.
Then use redsnow to JB and install ultrasnow from cydia after that to unlock it.

Fantastic! thanks again Applejuiced. It sounds too easy so that's why I decided to ask on the forums to be absolutely sure;)

My wife is paranoid that I'll brick my phone if I even think about attempting to do this (even though it's practically impossible to brick it)

One last question. IF I decided to go the 4.0 route, can I go back to 3.1.2 if I don't like it or it doesn't work right or something? From what I've read so far, it sounds like when you upgrade to 4.0 it also updates the firmware or baseband or something and then you can't go back. Is this true?

There is some change in this... for 3G and firmware 4.x.x there are now hashes required, but not for 3.x.x firmware restores with 3G.

Yep, I just read about it a few minutes ago.
Thanks D.
So those hashes are just for 4.0+ 3G models and what was the way to go around that?
How do you use redsn0w or PwnageTool to get past the error?

You cant go back to 3.1.2 unless you have SHSH's for that built.
If you have for 3.1.3 you can always go back to that version by redirecting your hosts file to point to cydias server to enable your device to go down to that firmware.
4.0 and 4.0.1 also updates the baseband but ultrasnow unlocks those basebands also in case you need an unlock.

Your wife is not paranoid you'll brick your phone... she's just worried you'll mess something up and be unable to unlock it and use it on TMO... especially seeing as she was the one to originally jailbreak and unlock your phone. ;-)

Damn . . . she found me :p

i just went through this myself.

I installed 3.1.3 and JB with redsnow...since you can pretty much unlock any baseband 4.26.08 onward, i decided to start fresh...

You just need to pick ACTIVATED when you do your JB.....am i wrong here?

Mission Accomplished

Well, I successfully upgraded my 3G from 3.0.1 to 3.1.2 without a hitch :D

My thanks to Applejuiced for his assistance and the very easy to follow tutorial at iclarified.com.

I'll probably play with this for a while and ponder a future upgrade to 4.0 at some point.

You mentioned going from 3.0.1. Tutorial mentions jailbreaking 3.1.2. My 3g is also on 3.0.1 and it is not jailbroken or unlocked, will this method still work ?

Thanks
