is it possible to get an iPhone 3g w/o the voice plan since VOIP apps will be allowed and the phone will be connected to the internet so does anyone know if this is possible?

What would be the point of buying a phone and not using the phone feature?
You cant buy an iphone without a data plan
The iphone data plans can't be bought separate from the voice plans.

Ultimately you will get the run around on the phone with att if you call em.
Let me save you the trouble

No.

And if you want voip then dont buy an iphone get an ipod touch.

1. not interested in hacking for mic
2. even if i did get a touch, i wouldn't have edge/3g in most areas w/o wifi

I'm pretty sure deaf people have gotten iPhone plans without a voice plan.

haha that would be very funny to have go in with a friend, and try to have him explain that you;re deaf, and you could just sit there all spacy pretending not to listen to the conversation.

yeah, only deaf people can get the iPhone sans a voice plan: http://www.wireless.att.com/about/disability-resources/text-accessibility-plan-for-iphone.jsp

Btw, have VOIP apps been confirmed? I thought Steve had said that VOIP wouldn't be allowed to run over 3g...

Correct, the terms of the SDK say VoIP can only work over WiFi, not 3G or EDGE. So the only option, if the OP wants 3G, is to buy the no-commitment phone when available, and once 2.0 is jailbroken, do that and install an unofficial VoIP app. There's no way to do it otherwise. AT&T won't let you have a 3G iPhone without a voice plan and any VoIP app from the App Store will not work over 3G/EDGE.

Do you think it would be possible to have a VoIP app that would tie into my number? I wouldn't mind being able to use the iPhone on the go, but when I'm at home/work and have wifi, I would like to use VoIP so I can save on my minutes...
