I have an iphone 3G with 3.1.3 software
i jailbroke it with sprit
I would like to upgrade the software version to 4.2 from 3.1.3
how can i do it with out loosing my jailbreak
help is really appreciated

4.2/4.2.1 is a tethered jailbreak. If I were you, I'd wait until there is another solution, unless you're fine with a tethered jailbreak.


If you want to (assuming you don't need the unlock):

Upgrade to 4.2 via iTunes. Download Redsn0w. Download a iPhone 4.2 ipsw. Jailbreak.

Now that Pwnage 4.1.3 is released you can jailbreak your iPhone 3G untethered.
 
Yes. If you need an unlock, do not update via iTunes.

Try to avoid 4.2, it makes you use iPad baseband so that it can be unlocked. Though if you don't care that Apple will void your warranty (and probably wont' do any repairs on it), then that's ok
