Iphone 3G with ipod car charger =no sound?

was a gift the person thought it would work for iphone as well since the iphone was one of the pics on the box.....anyway
the charger works fine as far as charging but when i use my ipod while it is charging the sound is disabled one i unplug it sound comes back?
weird thing is it sometimes would work when i first got the charger but now it never works.
any way around this issue?

Try these...

Plug in a headset, then plug in the charger, then unplug the headset.

Try turning the vibration mode on, plug in the charger, then turn vibration mode off.
